Under the general direction of the Branch Chief, a Staff Service Manager I (SSM I) for the Clerical Support Staff Unit, the Office Technician (OT) (Typing) will be part of a clerical support pool that will be responsible for performing a variety of general office duties within the Division of Human Resources (DHR). The OT will be flexible in accommodating changing workload priorities as needed to assist areas within DHR. The OT will perform record retention services, purchasing supplies, filing, and general clerical work. The OT demonstrates a positive attitude and a commitment to provide quality service that is accurate, timely and exceeds our customers’ expectations

Working Conditions

This position is located in Sacramento.

In office, the incumbent will use a cubicle space in a climate-controlled office setting with artificial lighting, which may have limited viewing access to outdoors.  At the direction of management, there may be a combination of telework/in-office hours.  The incumbent may occasionally take transportation (car, light rail, bike, walk, or other mode of locomotion) to other State facilities for training and meetings.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with ability to organize/prioritize workload to meet demands and adapt to ongoing change
  • Experience with tracking and maintaining logs; filing and organizing files; collecting and distributing mail
  • Experience which demonstrates knowledge of Microsoft Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access
  • Experience proofreading, typing, editing and creating reports and correspondence
  • Ability to work as part of a team and individually with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide the highest level of customer service in all situations
  • Ability to work under pressure and to perform multiple tasks with precision
  • Ability to use sound judgement and willingness to exercise a high degree of initiative and independence in performing assigned tasks
